#14: Sex education films

Boy, that’s really neat, Beav.

Sex Education filmRemember those cheesy ass sex education films in school?

I think it was in fifth grade when we were sent home with permission slips to watch a movie about puberty and sex. Anyway, that movie was one of the funniest moments I had in grade school, and I still chuckle over it to this day. I didn’t get ANY benefit to that movie whatsoever…I had Playboy, remember?

The boys were separated into one room and the girls into another. The (male) principal was one of the people in that room along with a female teacher which was odd as the girl’s room had all female adults. The boys made it a point to mention the “sexism,” but the principal simply told them to hush.

We were given a speech, and the principal said that anyone could write discreet questions on a slip of paper and place it into a box, and he would answer them at the end of the movie.

Anyway they started the movie and you can pretty much guess what it was like. It was one of those older films played on a projector (are those things still around in classrooms?), and it was being shown to a room filled with immature boys.

I distinctly remember an side illustration of a penis on screen drawn very inaccurately. It stuck out straight and then curved STRAIGHT down midway through, like a pipe underneath the sink. It might have been a penis…if it belonged to a man sporting an erection before crashing straight into the wall.

Anyway, after the movie the principal opened the box and only two slips of paper were inside. The first question was “What is a condom?” What wasn’t so funny was the question, but the principals attempt at answering it without being too crude.

Inspector Gadget“Uh….right…the condom. It’s a device….”

I started sniggering again. “He called it a device!” I whispered to my friend next to me. What was it, a device like Inspector Gadget sported? Was it mechanical? Even to this day, I don’t think it’d refer to it as a “device.”

Anyway, the principal got through his non-informative explanation and opened the other question. He got a disgusted look on his face and crumpled it up. I found out later that someone had written “Can we watch the girls’ movie instead?”

Speaking of them, the girls returned to class a little while after us carrying pamphlets of sorts. (Hey, we didn’t get a pamphlet.) The boys tried their damnedest to get a peek at them but the girls wouldn’t have it.

Even back when they’re 11 years old, women were still part of some mysterious society or something.

Well, CG is definitely right about that.

From what I remember, the girls video was mostly about trying not to flip out when you get your period. They kept saying things like, “It’s normal, really, don’t worry, everything is ok.” Hahaha. All I cared about was getting out of class for a few hours. : )
