American Virgin
Like fine American pie.
So here we start our three-part “Virgin week,” taking a look at other virgins in the media whether real or fictional. Our first stop is the 2000 film American Virgin starring Mena Suvari. This movie’s original working title was “Live Virgin” (which would have made far more sense), but the producers decided to piggyback onto Suvari’s success in American Pie and American Beauty and title this movie American Virgin.
In the film, Suvari plays 18-year-old Katrina Bartolotti, rebellious daughter to famous porn director Ronny Bartolotti (Robert Loggia). Ronny’s rival Joey Quinn (Bob Hoskins) decides to one-up him by producing a live and interactive adult PPV of the deflowering of a virgin called “Live Virgin”…and that virgin just happens to be a willing Katrina. The movie follows Ronny’s desperation to keep his daughter pure and not go through with being used in that way, despite the obvious irony.
Some of the more silly and amusing parts in the film include Bob Hoskins in his “interactive outfit” demonstrating how the technology works, a shouting match between Hoskins and Loggia in opposite jail cells, and Hoskins getting an unflattering tattoo imprinted on his forehead in one scene. Oh, but of course…be on the lookout for Ron Jeremy in a cameo appearance.
This movie isn’t great, but it isn’t horrible either…it’s just absurd enough to earn it “cult status.” And is it just me, or was Mena Suvari always overrated?

Never saw the movie - but agreed on the overrated-ness. What has she even been in lately?
